The short version: Gnome does not require an account, and we don't collect personal information from you during normal use. The app may send anonymous usage telemetry to our server (which you can turn off). If you upgrade to the paid version on the web, you provide an email address as part of the purchase; if you upgrade through the iOS App Store, we do not receive your email. Either way, we will never sell, rent, or share your email address with anyone.
Information we collect during normal use

None of your personal information. Gnome does not require an account. During regular use of the app, we do not ask for your name, your email address, your phone number, your contacts, your location, your photos, or any other personally identifiable information. We do not link any usage data to your Apple ID, your device ID, your advertising identifier, or any other identifier that could be used to recognize you.

If you upgrade to the paid version

Gnome offers a one-time paid upgrade that unlocks all functionality. There are two ways to purchase it, and they collect different information:

When we do receive your email address (i.e. for web purchases), we use it for the following purposes only:

We will never sell, rent, trade, or share your email address with any third party for marketing purposes. Your email is not added to any advertising or marketing lists, and we do not provide it to anyone outside of Lex Friedman Consulting, LLC and the payment processors that need it to complete and service your purchase. If you'd like us to delete your email address from our records, just email lex@lexfriedman.com and we'll take care of it.

Anonymous telemetry

Gnome may send anonymous, aggregate usage information back to our server. This telemetry consists of generic event counts — things like “the app was opened,” “a search was performed,” or “a particular feature was used.” This information is not tied to you, your device, or any identifier that could be used to recognize you in the future, and we do not combine it with any other data (including any email address collected during an upgrade) to attempt to re-identify users.

The purpose of this telemetry is solely to help us understand how Gnome is being used in aggregate, so we can make better decisions about which features to improve and which bugs to prioritize.

You can opt out at any time. Telemetry can be disabled in the app's settings. When you turn it off, the app stops sending event data immediately and permanently, unless you turn it back on.

Information we do not collect Server logs

When the app contacts our server (for telemetry, or to fetch GIFs and other content), our server software may keep basic technical information in temporary logs — for example, an IP address, the time of a request, and the type of request. These logs are used to operate the service, debug problems, and prevent abuse. They are rotated and discarded on a routine schedule, and they are never combined with any personal information to identify individual users.

Hosting and infrastructure

Gnome's backend runs on infrastructure provided by Apple and Linode. Those companies have access to the basic technical information passing through their services. Their handling of that information is governed by their own privacy policies.

Contacting support

If you choose to email us through our support page or directly at lex@lexfriedman.com, we will of course see your email address and the content of your message. We only use that information to respond to you. We do not add you to any mailing list and we do not share your email with anyone.

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act Compliance

We never collect or maintain information from those we actually know are under 13, and no part of the app is structured to attract anyone under 13.

California Online Privacy Protection Act Compliance

We comply with the California Online Privacy Protection Act. We do not distribute personal information to outside parties — primarily because we don't collect any to begin with.

Information for European Union users

By using Gnome, you authorize us to collect, use, and store any non-personal information described above outside of the European Union. Because we do not collect personal data, GDPR data-subject requests (access, deletion, portability) would return nothing about you.

International transfers of information

Information may be processed, stored, and used outside of the country in which you are located. Data privacy laws vary across jurisdictions, and different laws may be applicable to your data depending on where it is processed, stored, or used.

Changes to this policy

Although most changes are likely to be minor, Gnome may change this Privacy Policy from time to time, at our sole discretion. Your continued use of the app after any change in this Privacy Policy will constitute your acceptance of such change. The “Effective” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
