If someone opts into your mailing list, by all means, yes — they want those messages. They’ve said so.
But if I email you, human to human, to say hello, set up a meeting, discuss a deal… That is explicitly and absolutely not an invitation to add me to your company’s list.
I encounter this behavior a couple times a month. I email an old contact or reach out to a potential client, and soon start receiving their newsletter.
We all know how easily inboxes get out of control. I’m incredibly strict with my email and what lists I put myself on. If you add me to a list without my permission, you’ve worsened my day — and your reputation with me. Resist the urge.
I know you want your list to grow. I encourage you to include it in your signature. But if you’re confident in your list and don’t want to be seen as a jerk, ask me before putting me on your list.
